The Artist

A couple of months ago, I went to a consultation about my work with consultant Zoe Whishaw. It was a whirlwind, and in three hours I covered more about my work and photogrpahy than I had done in possibly five years since leaving my degree at university. It took me a few days to process what we’d covered, and I think I’m still going over it all now, months later.

However, one of the main things that I left with was this: I need to get more of myself in my work.

I feel like that sounds obvious, and like most artists/creatives are supposed to do that. But I guess I’ve been so focused on building a business (and enjoying building a business) that I almost forgot that my art really is about me. Not just about the brands I work with.

So I began to look inside myself for inspiration. What did I want to say to the world? What did I feel personally inspired by?

It pretty much always comes back to art.

Since I can remember I’ve wanted to be seen as an artist. I don’t really know why, but the romance of being an artist always appealed to me. So when I began to come up with editorial ideas, the story of an artist felt like the one I really wanted to start with.

I spent a huge amount of time planning this editorial, and I’ve added the plans in here for you to see, because I feel like it gives a good idea of how the whole shoot came together. I hope it’s interesting for you to see!

I’m thrilled with these images. I feel like they really encapsulate what I wanted to achieve, and I can truly see a part of me in them. The team as a whole was a dream, not only to work with but in that they achieved everything I wanted and more. I can’t wait to do more shoots following this process in future, and exploring more of myself in my work.
