Farm Girl for Phoenix Magazine

Once in a while, I produce a shoot that really, truly comes together exactly how I wanted it to. This is a perfect example of that. When my partner and I moved from Cornwall to Reading in August, the landscape that we were surrounded by changed dramatically. No more were we walking along the cliffs and beaches. We’d swapped that for farmland - as far as the eye can see.

As soon as we arrived, all I could think about was stories about farm girls. Very quickly I found myself on Pinterest putting together a moodboard inspired by the images in my head, and it wasn’t long before I’d assembled an incredible team of creatives to bring my vision to life.

It was a balmy, hot day in September - one of the last warm, long days that we had. The sun was high in the sky, and there wasn’t a single cloud. There was no wind, it was honestly everything i’d wanted it to be. We shot all afternoon into the late evening, catching the last of the suns rays in the farmland just 5 minutes from the house that we’re now living in.

I chose to shoot entirely on 35mm film - my go to medium. The process of shooting on film slows me right down, and no matter how hard I try, I just cannot replicate the look and feel with digital images. I’m not exaggerating when I say that as I started to get the first scans in from the film lab, I almost cried. After the year that 2020 has been, creating something that I love so much made all the difficult months, and the big move, feel so, so, so worth it.

To top it off, to be given the digital cover of Phoenix Magazine was more than I could have dreamt of! So I must say a big thank you to them. Of course, I couldn’t have done it without the whole team, who were just as excited about my idea as I was, and really gave it their all.
